More than 2,000 people descended on Fraser River Discovery Centre on Monday for the City of New Westminster's inaugural Family Day festivities.

The Family Day event featured entertainment, displays and activities for folks of all ages.

"We tried to go right from the little kids and everything they enjoy to seniors," said Coun. Betty McIntosh, who chairs the city's family court committee, which organized the event.

The Family Day event was so well attended that some of the booths ran out of supplies and giveaways.

"There were so many more attendees than I ever expected," McIntosh said. "The first time out, you don't know what to expect."

When lineups starting forming at 10: 30 a.m., organizers knew to expect a crowd when the fun got underway at 11 a.m. Discovery Centre was at its 500-person capacity for most of the day.

"It was a really good chance for people to see Fraser River Discovery Centre," McIntosh added.
