The under-14 New Westminster Warlocks lost an epic two hour and 25 minute marathon final 8-7 in double overtime to the Vancouver Barbarians at the B.C. Tier 2 field lacrosse provincials in Victoria.
Game MVP Laiton Manuel scored two goals, including the game-tying marker, and added one assist, while Enzo Gentile led the team with three markers in a four-point outing to help New West earn the silver medal. Goalie Nikolas Lund-Murray was named the tournament MVP.
The two well-matched teams played down to the final goal in a pair of separate contests at the provincials.
The Warlocks finished the round-robin with a 3-0 record, including an earlier 5-4 win over the eventual champions. Frank Darby popped in the game-winning goal in that game with just 30 seconds left in the match.
In the gold-medal final, Manuel sent the game into extra time after an end-to-end pass from Lund-Murray.
Big poles Taylor Jensen and Emmett Donahoe were standouts on defence, while Reid Asals, Griffon Balfouer, Nathan Brajak, Braedon Macdonald and Michael Cirrillo provided speed and toughness throughout the tournament
In the crossover matchup, New West came back to edge Mission 7-6 on Manuel's game-winner in the final 10 seconds of play to advance the Warlocks into the final.
New West squandered a 5-1 first-half lead but regrouped following a turnaround counter by Darby that tied the contest.
New West also soundly defeated Mid Island 10-0 in the opening game. Enzo Gentile led the way with five goals, while Naoll Degife and Manuel potted a pair of goals apiece.
In the team's second game, the Warlocks beat Burnaby 7-4 behind the solid play of game MVP and fair play award winner Degife. Aidan Isbister and Darby tallied two goals apiece. Manuel garnered a hat trick.
Junior coach Serafino Gentile, the older brother of Enzo, took over the head coaching duties of the team with no prior experience and was named the u-14 fair play coach.
At the u-12 level, New Westminster's team picked up its only point with a 5-5 draw with Victoria in pool play. The Royal City side dropped earlier games to Valley 14-11 and to the Adanacs by an 8-5 score.
