Two Royal City Curling Club skips made it through to the senior men's provincials on Sunday.
Skips Brian Gessner and Doug Meger both earned berths to the upcoming B.C. championships with wins in their respective events at the interregional curling playdowns at the Royal City Curling Club.
The Gessner rink of third Neil Houston, second Greg Monkman and lead John Smiley won the B event final with a five-shot eighth end in a 6-1 win over Jay Tuson of Victoria.
Meger, who made it to the final rounds of both the A and B draws, knocked off clubmate Mel Steffin 9-7 in the semifinal before sending Tuson home emptyhanded with a 6-5 victory over the Victoria rink to earn the region's fourth berth into the B.C.s.
Gessner was relegated to the B event following a 7-1 loss to Tuson in the second draw on Jan. 19.
Gessner then rattled off five straight wins to take the second available qualifying berth.
Ken Watson of Richmond took the A event final with a 9-6 win over Royal City's Rick Pughe.
Gessner had a productive Saturday, opening with an 11-3 win over Terry Johnson of Richmond and an 8-1 five-ender against Meger.
Gessner then got by Wayne Harris of Comox 7-5 with a shot in the 10th end Sunday to advance to the final.
Meger, along with third Mike Moss, second Brett Kury and lead John Homenuke, made it to the semifinal of the A event, but dropped a 5-3 decision to Pughe. He was relegated to the C event after Gessner's five-shot steal in the third.
In the C event, Meger earned his berth, scratching out a 7-5 win with a winning rock in the 10th end against Cal Fister of Golden Ears.
Meger had to come back with three in the 10th to upend Steffin to advance into the C final.
In the final, Meger took a 5-3 lead with a three-rock eighth end. But Tuson struck back with two in the ninth and a steal in the 10th to force an extra end. With final rock, Meger scored the win.
Steffin had a hot-and-cold interregional bonspiel.
The Steffin rink lost 9-8 to Meger in the opening draw. The foursome then won three B-event matches before being stopped by Wes Craig of Victoria.
Steffin eked out a pair of one-rock wins over Alan Roemer of Delta and Stu Harris of Cloverdale before coming out on the short end to Meger for a second time in the semifinal.
Wayne Harris took the other C event final.
In the senior women's regional final, four-time provincial champion Kathy Smiley of Royal City locked up the B-event berth, knocking off clubmate Katie Witt 7-4 in the final.
Smiley made it all the way to the A final before losing 7-3 to Penny Shantz of Nanaimo.
Witt had an unlucky meeting with eventual C qualifier Karen Lepine of Langley in the final two days of the competition.
Witt held off a late charge by the Langley rink in the opening B-event draw, winning 7-6. After taking an unsuccessful run to the B final, Witt met Lepine again in the C qualifying final with the opposite result.
In a back-and-forth qualifier, Lepine scored three in the eighth to take the lead. Witt struck back with two in the ninth before being forced to concede defeat in the 10th end.
