A 40-year-old New Westminster man is recovering in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being assaulted in his apartment on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred just before 11: 30 p.m. when four men entered the man's apartment in the 400-block of Eighth Street, assaulted the man and took more than $400 in cash. The man was able to go to his neighbour's apartment to call 911 for help. According to media reports, the man suffered burns when the assailants used a blowtorch on him.

The New Westminster Police Department responded and tried using the dog unit to locate the four suspects, but the trail ran cold.

The police department's major crime unit is investigating the incident, and investigators believe the attack to be targeted and not random in nature.
