Hundreds of residents were evacuated in New Westminster early Friday morning after a car fire in a residential parkade.
Assistant deputy fire chief Jim Wishlove said firefighters were called to the parkade under two apartment towers and some townhomes on Agnes Street near Blackie Street.
He said black smoke was billowing out of the parkade, making the situation seem worse than it was and causing alarm for residents.
The residents were all evacuated and TransLink donated some buses for them to stay in to keep warm while they waited for firefighters to put out the blaze, he said.
Wishlove said the parkade's sprinkler system help put out the fire in the car, which he said belonged to one of the residents.
There were no injuries, he added.
Firefighters don't know what caused the fire and are continuing to investigate.
Agnes Street was closed for several hours during the early morning commute but has since reopened.
