The players taking part in an upcoming attempt to set a new record for the world's longest hockey game will be enjoying some rather less strenuous activities this Friday night.
Organizers of the Longest Game 4 CF, a 10-day women's hockey game, beginning August 26 at Canlan Ice Sports Burnaby 8 Rinks, are holding a fundraiser Feb. 25 at Schanks Sports Grill in Queensborough. Twenty dollar tickets include a burger and a beer, as well as access to the cavernous sports bar's games, which include mini-golf, virtual golf and pool.
Schanks manager Jen Pulham said an estimated 350 advance tickets have already been sold and will also be available at the door. A variety of donated prizes will also be up for grabs, including a brand-new flatscreen TV.
"It's a great cause and I'm glad we are able to help them out," said Pulham. "With the virtual golf, they're going to play closest to the pin and longest drive. They'll also be doing a slide show on one of our screens, which is the largest in the Lower Mainland at 30 feet."
The upcoming epic game will attempt to break the most recent world record, which was set earlier this week in Alberta by a team of 39 men and one woman, by exactly 65 minutes.
The target time was chosen specifically as a tribute to the late Eva Markvoort, who drew worldwide attention to cystic fibrosis - a respiratory condition that strikes roughly one in 2,000 people and is the most fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians - after sharing her personal struggles with it through the award-winning documentary 65_RedRoses and her blog of the same name.
"We are continually in admiration of how Eva's story continues to unfold in so many manifold ways," said Bill Markvoort, Eva's father, in a recent interview with Shaw TV. "We're just staggered. We had no idea it would go this way and we just continue to benefit from these wonderful people doing these wonderful things."
