City leaders might just want to reconsider the ancient and honourable moniker The Royal City and change it to New Westminster - The Fun City. We would suggest calling it the City of Festivals, but, apparently, Edmonton and Montreal both claim that title.
It's just our humble opinion, of course, but we think that given the population of New Westminster - roughly 63,000 - we have a fairly high ratio of festivals and fun public events in the city.
There is the traditional May Day and Hyack Festival events (and that includes quite a few related celebrations). Then there are Queensborough Days, the 12th Street Festival, Yam Jam, Multicultural Festival, FraserFest, Volunteer Festival, Easter in Queen's Park, Doggy Fun Day and even a Royal City Book Festival, and the first Pride Festival set for August (our apologies if we missed your favourite fun event).
This past weekend, Sapperton Days provided residents with yet another opportunity to enjoy the best of neighbourhood celebrations. The folks who work tirelessly to put on Sapperton Days deserve several bouquets of roses for pulling together a down-to-earth, rollicking good festival.
What we really love about Sapperton Days is the organizers' abilities to keep the event so kid-interactive and family-friendly.
Kids got to decorate cupcakes, ride bikes, knit tea cosies and even make get-well cards for patients at Royal Columbian Hospital. The events are thoughtful and a great relief to parents who are bombarded with so much high-tech, high-cost entertainment demands nowadays.
And now we hear that another neighbourhood is rallying to start a new festival in the city. The Grimston Park festival is still in the formative stages - but, if this city's spirit for family fun and celebration is any indication - we think this festival will be another unique display of the fun to be had in New Westminster.
After all, you can never have too much fun.
