Royal City residents are invited to a family-friendly evening of play and live music at Summerfest 2010.

The city's newest community celebration takes place in Grimston Park on Saturday, July 17, starting at 4 p.m. The event includes a mini farmers' market and a free outdoor screening of E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial.

"I have such great memories of watching E.T. as a child, and it will be magical to introduce a whole new generation to E.T.'s glowing heart, his obsession with Reese's Pieces candy and his quest to 'phone home,'" said festival organizer Briana Tomkinson, a blogger with Tenth to the Fraser. "What a treat to watch the scene when Elliott, E.T. and his bike ride up into the sky and past the moon outside on a big screen, surrounded by family and friends."

The festival kicks off at 4 p.m. with the opening of the mini farmers' market that will be run by Royal City Farmers Market. Papa Dave's Pizza will sell fresh pizza on site, and Village Coffee Lounge will offer coffee by donation.

Summerfest will also include live music including Ross Werlick on steel guitar, Chris Messytone on accordion, Ron Ulrich's classic pop-rock covers, blues band Delta Blue and folk singer-songwriter Gillian Hobbs.

Kids can check out Grimston Park's new playground, water play activities and crafts. New Westminster's only wading pool is staying open later than usual for Summerfest.

Residents will also have a chance to help complete the final piece of mosaic art that will find a home on 12th Street.

At 9:30 p.m., residents are invited to gather on the grass and enjoy a screening of E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial - and view the FraserFest fireworks from the West End park.

"For me, Grimston Park is the West End's meeting place for adults, kids, nature and dog lovers alike," said Summerfest organizer MaryAnn Mortensen. "It's so much more than a park, it's a place to connect with others."
