After boyfriend Everett pops the question, neurotic Isabel Lukens flees to Rome to collect herself, and she winds up picking up something else entirely: hunky housepainter Leo Roth, a fellow Los Angeleno who has come to the Eternal City following his mother's death. The two have a passionate fling, then head back to California and their lives. But Isabel finds Leo popping into her head, even as she is trying to plan her wedding to another man, a situation her white-collar family finds completely unacceptable.
