Movie buffs will be able to enjoy some family-friendly flicks in an outdoor setting in New Westminster this summer.

The City of New Westminster and G&F Financial are joining forces to present four outdoor movies this summer in the Royal City.

"They are going to be in Queen's Park Stadium," said Sandon Fraser, the city's youth services coordinator. "It's free movies."

Fraser said he'd attended outdoor movies in other communities, and he wanted to offer a similar experience in New Westminster.

"They are quite popular," he said. "I wanted to see it come to New West."

Fraser mentioned the idea to Louise Perry, who manages the G&F Financial branch on Sixth Street. G&F has agreed to sponsor the movies.

"There will be popcorn and a cash concession," Fraser said. "Everyone is encouraged to bring their own blanket or lawn chair."

Because the movies are being shown in Queen's Park Stadium, people are welcome to sit in the stands.

The outdoor movie series gets underway on Friday, Aug. 17, when Ghostbusters will be shown on a big screen at 8: 30 p.m.

That will be followed by The Muppets on Friday, Aug. 24; Big on Friday, Aug. 31; and Toy Story, which is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 7.
