The folks at Fraser River Discovery Centre are looking for people who share their enthusiasm about the Fraser River.
Shannon King, the center's education coordinator, is looking forward to expanding the teams of volunteer guides, or docents, as they allow Discovery Centre to offer more school programs, while keeping group sizes small.
"Many of our volunteers say that being a docent is a lot of fun because the school children are so excited to be exploring the centre," she said. "Their enthusiasm is infectious."
Docents work in teams to present hands-on activities to visiting classes. Anyone can be a docent, as no special background or experience is required.
Full training is provided to anyone wanting to be a docent at Fraser River Discovery Centre.
The only qualifications required are that docents be interested in working with children, have a desire to learn about the Fraser River, and have a weekday morning or afternoon to give to the centre.
Fraser River Discovery Centre will be offering four school programs in the fall on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Each program includes a number of hands-on stations to teach kids about the different aspects of the Fraser River.
"Through mock archeological excavations, science experiments and games, we are encouraging children to care about the Fraser River," King said.
Training sessions will be held throughout September, with orientation sessions for new volunteers taking place on Wednesday, Sept. 8 and Friday, Sept. 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering at Fraser River Discovery Centre can register for one of these sessions by Sept. 6. Call 604-521-8401 or send an e-mail to info@fraserriverdiscovery.org.
A complete volunteer role description and a volunteer application form can be found on the centre's website.

While the gallery displays change from time to time, George, a model of a Fraser River white sturgeon, is a permanent resident of the centre.
His story is one of many told to schoolchildren by team of volunteers docents at the centre.
Fraser River Discovery Centre, an interpretative centre connecting community in discovery and celebration of the Fraser River, is located at 788 Quayside Dr.
It's open daily until Aug. 31 and Wednesday to Saturday after Sept. 1.
